Francis E. Brownell, Pvt. 11th New York Infantry. First person to receive the Medal of Honor. He received the Medal of Honor for immediately killing James Jackson a southern sympathizer and inn keeper of the Marshall House Inn. Jackson killed Brownell’s commanding officer Col. Elmer E. Ellsworth as he and Brownell were descending the staircase after they took down a Confederate flag flying above James Jackson’s Inn in Alexandria, VA on May 24th 1861.This picture was taken soon after the killing. Pvt. Brownell can be seen standing on the Confederate flag that was flying above Jackson’s Inn.
